Abhishek Sharma

Ahead of the five-match T20I series between India and South Africa, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has shared his insights on Jasprit Bumrah’s role, Hardik Pandya’s comeback, and Abhishek Sharma’s form, as India gear up for a crucial series ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

🏏 Bumrah’s Overs Will Be Key

After being rested in the ODI series, Jasprit Bumrah returns for the T20I leg. Patel emphasized the importance of managing his three-over quota carefully:

“India has been using Bumrah for three overs in the Powerplay since the Asia Cup. If he bowls three overs early, he has only one over left for the death, usually the 19th over. India will have to use him carefully. If they want him for three Powerplay overs, then Arshdeep Singh must support him in the death overs.”

Bumrah’s utilization strategy could prove decisive against the World Cup runners-up South Africa.

🔥 Hardik Pandya’s Return Crucial

Pandya, sidelined due to a quadriceps injury since the Asia Cup 2025, recently showcased his fitness and form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while representing Baroda. Patel sees his return as pivotal:

“Hardik Pandya is key. He did really well in SMAT, contributing with both bat and ball. His presence adds experience and helps guide the youngsters. I’m looking forward to his comeback.”

Pandya will aim to bolster both India’s batting depth and bowling options during the five-match T20I series.

💥 Abhishek Sharma in Red-Hot Form

Patel also highlighted the importance of Abhishek Sharma, who has been in phenomenal touch in the ongoing SMAT:

  • Runs: 304 in 6 matches

  • Average: 50.67

  • Strike Rate: 249.18

  • Milestones: 1 century, 2 fifties

“Abhishek Sharma is the player of the season. He’s scoring heavily and hitting a lot of sixes. Can he continue this form? I think he can. His runs at the top of the order will be crucial for India in this series against South Africa.”

📅 T20I Series Schedule

  • 1st T20I: Dec 9, Cuttack

  • 2nd T20I: Dec 11, Mullanpur

  • 3rd T20I: Dec 14, Dharamsala

  • 4th T20I: Dec 17, Lucknow

  • 5th T20I: Dec 19, Ahmedabad

India will look to capitalize on their recent ODI series win as they test combinations and strategies against a strong South African side.
