England all-rounder David Willey has shed light on a growing trend in global franchise cricket — overseas players opting for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) over the more glamorous Indian Premier League (IPL) in search of guaranteed playing opportunities.
Speaking during the ILT20, Willey said that for many foreign cricketers, the priority is certainty, especially with the IPL 2026 auction on the horizon.
🎯 “Nobody wants a 10-week bench stint in the IPL” — Willey
Willey pointed out a major concern among overseas players:
the four-foreign-player rule in IPL XIs.
This frequently leads to situations where a contracted player is benched for the majority of the tournament:
“You could spend 10 weeks in the IPL without playing a single game,” Willey explained.
“But in the PSL, you know you’re going to play. That matters when you want to stay match-sharp and prove yourself before a big auction.”
🏏 Why PSL Seems More Player-Friendly
According to Willey, the PSL provides:
-
Consistent game-time, regardless of reputation
-
Shorter squads, increasing the likelihood of selection
-
Opportunities to showcase skills right before global leagues and auctions
-
A platform to maintain match rhythm and confidence
While the IPL remains the biggest commercial league, many overseas players are opting for the PSL when they value certainty over glamour.
🔍 Auction Year Decisions
With the IPL 2026 mega auction approaching, several players are choosing leagues where they can stay in rhythm and present recent performances to franchises—something bench time in the IPL cannot offer.
