Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has voiced strong concerns over Shubman Gill’s extended slump in T20Is, warning that the young opener’s struggles are now placing added pressure on India’s team management ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Pathan said Gill’s repeated low scores have created uncertainty within the setup:
“It puts pressure not just on Gill, but on the management as well. They’re unsure how to respond because the options are available, but none feel like immediate solutions.”
🔄 Samson’s Return Not a Quick Fix
Pathan also pointed out that Sanju Samson’s return to the squad doesn’t guarantee stability at the top. Samson himself has blown hot and cold in the format, and expecting him to instantly settle India’s opening concerns would be unrealistic.
🎯 Spotlight on Suryakumar Yadav Too
The former pacer didn’t limit his assessment to Gill alone. He stressed that captain Suryakumar Yadav must also tighten his game:
-
Improve shot selection
-
Bat at the right position according to match situation
-
Provide clear direction ahead of the World Cup
According to Pathan, Suryakumar’s role is critical in shaping India’s approach in the powerplay and middle overs.
🏆 World Cup Context
With the World Cup approaching, India needs clarity at the top of the order. Gill’s form dip, combined with the lack of a settled opening partner, has put the management in a tricky position—especially with several alternatives waiting in the wings.
