The Indian women’s cricket team has begun its five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with a fresh face making headlines. Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma earned her international debut in the opening T20I at Visakhapatnam on Sunday, marking a major milestone in her young career.
🏏 Dream Debut for a Rising Star
India won the toss and chose to bowl first, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur handed Vaishnavi her maiden India cap, replacing Harleen Deol in the playing XI. The 19-year-old has been rewarded for her outstanding performances at the junior level and is now officially part of India’s senior setup.
📍 From Gwalior to the National Team
Vaishnavi Sharma hails from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. Her journey is inspiring — her father, Narendra Sharma, is a professional astrologer, while his daughter has scripted her own destiny on the cricket field. Following her selection, several prominent leaders, including Jyotiraditya Scindia and Yashodhara Raje, congratulated her on social media.
⭐ Under-19 World Cup Heroics
Vaishnavi shot to national attention during the 2025 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps. One of her standout moments was a sensational hat-trick against Malaysia, which underlined her control, temperament, and wicket-taking ability.
🔍 India’s Shift Towards Youth
With several senior players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, and Renuka Singh either in or nearing their 30s, the Indian team management is clearly focusing on grooming the next generation.
Alongside Vaishnavi, young batter G Kamalini has also been included in the squad, signaling a long-term vision ahead of future World Cups.
🌀 Big Opportunity Ahead
In the absence of Radha Yadav, Vaishnavi could get extended opportunities to bowl alongside fellow left-arm spinner N. Sri Charani, who has also impressed in recent months. The ongoing Sri Lanka series will serve as a crucial testing ground for India’s young talents.
