New Delhi, February 4: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Jos Buttler and Phil Salt to open the innings for England in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, following England’s dominant 3–0 whitewash of Sri Lanka in the recent T20I series.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin praised England’s aggressive batting approach at the top of the order and highlighted how effectively they have controlled the powerplay in recent matches.
“England are coming into the T20 World Cup after whitewashing Sri Lanka 3–0 at home. They dominate the powerplay with the bat,” Ashwin said.
🔄 Opening Combination Debate
England have experimented with their opening options in recent times, occasionally pairing Ben Duckett with Phil Salt, while Jos Buttler has featured lower down the order.
However, Ashwin made a strong case for reverting to the Buttler–Salt combination at the top.
“The opening combination of Phil Salt and Jos Buttler needs some discussion because, at times, they have tried Duckett with Salt. From my side, I would love to see Buttler and Salt open together,” he added.
💪 Fitness & Experience Key Factors
Addressing concerns over Phil Salt’s recent minor injury, Ashwin expressed confidence that the explosive opener will be fit in time for the World Cup.
“I think Phil Salt has had a minor injury recently, but I believe he will play during the T20 World Cup.”
Ashwin also underlined the importance of Buttler’s vast experience, particularly in Asian conditions, where the tournament will be held.
“Buttler has huge experience in Asian conditions, and Salt is at the peak of his powers. That combination can give England a decisive edge,” Ashwin noted.
