The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a major update regarding the participation of Bangladeshi players in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, amid growing controversy surrounding Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) signing of Mustafizur Rahman.
🔴 What Sparked the Controversy?
Mustafizur Rahman became the costliest Bangladeshi player in IPL history after KKR acquired him for ₹9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction. However, his signing soon attracted criticism following reports of violent attacks on religious minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
The issue snowballed quickly, with questions raised over Rahman’s participation in the league. KKR and even the franchise’s co-owner came under heavy public scrutiny, turning the matter into a national talking point.
🏛️ BCCI’s Official Stand
Responding to the situation, BCCI sources clarified that no directive has been received from the Indian government regarding the exclusion of Bangladeshi players from IPL 2026.
According to NDTV, a senior BCCI official stated:
“For all foreign players—Bangladeshi or otherwise—government clearance is mandatory. Seven Bangladesh players were registered and one was picked. Franchises select players from the available pool. BCCI will act strictly as per government instructions. As of now, there are none.”
Similarly, an unnamed BCCI source told IANS that the board has not received any communication instructing them to stop Bangladeshi players from participating in the league.
“This is not in our hands. We haven’t received any direction from the government. Until then, nothing changes,” the source said.
