New Delhi [India], February 5: Former England captain Nasser Hussain has lauded Mitchell Marsh’s leadership, calling him the kind of captain players genuinely want to play for, as Australia prepare for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
Speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘The Experts’ View’, Hussain highlighted the impact Marsh has had on the Australian setup, both as a leader and as a top-order batter.
🧠 Leadership That Inspires
Hussain believes Marsh’s personality and leadership style have brought a new dimension to his game.
“You need a good captain. Mitchell Marsh is a good captain just by his personality. He’s someone you warm up to,” Hussain said.
“I think the whole cricketing world likes Mitchell Marsh. And when you like your captain, you want to play for him. I would want to play for Mitchell Marsh. He seems a very genuine person.”
Hussain added that Marsh leads from the front and sets the tone for the team.
“If he says, ‘Come on lads, let’s do this,’ you would want to do it. He leads by example, and his form at the top of the order has been superb.”
🔥 Explosive Starts & Strong Core
The former England skipper also praised Marsh’s ability to provide explosive starts in T20 cricket, calling it a key requirement for success in the format.
“In T20 cricket, you need a captain who can give you explosive starts, and Marsh provides that,” Hussain noted.
He also pointed to Tim David’s finishing ability and Adam Zampa’s importance as Australia’s core strengths, especially in subcontinental conditions.
“You need a good finisher, and Tim David has been brilliant in that role over the last year. And you need a fine spinner to get quick breakthroughs in India—Adam Zampa does that.”
🌍 Australia Enter as Strong Contenders
According to Hussain, despite new faces coming into the side, Australia still possess a strong core of match-winners.
“With new players coming through, Australia still have that core spine of highly skilled players. Leadership has given Mitchell Marsh a new dimension—he’s revelling in it, especially with his batting.”
Australia will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Ireland on February 11 at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, and are widely tipped as one of the tournament favourites.
