The abandonment of the fourth T20I between India and South Africa in Lucknow due to dense fog and hazardous air quality has sparked a wider debate on venue selection, drawing sharp reactions from fans, players, and even political leaders.

Among the strongest voices was Congress MP and noted cricket enthusiast Shashi Tharoor, who publicly questioned the BCCI’s decision to host an international match in a city battling severe pollution.

🌫️ What Happened in Lucknow?

The match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium never got underway as:

  • Visibility remained poor throughout the evening

  • The AQI crossed 400, firmly in the hazardous category

  • The toss, scheduled for 6:30 pm IST, was repeatedly delayed

  • After multiple inspections, umpires abandoned the game around 9:30 pm

The severity of conditions was underlined when Hardik Pandya was seen wearing a surgical mask during warm-ups.

🗣️ Shashi Tharoor’s Criticism

Reacting on social media, Tharoor criticised both the air quality and the venue choice, suggesting an alternative location:

“Cricket fans have been waiting in vain for the match to start in Lucknow. But thanks to dense smog and an AQI of 411, visibility is too poor to permit a game of cricket. They should’ve scheduled the game in Thiruvananthapuram, where AQI is about 68 right now!”

His remarks quickly went viral, adding pressure on the BCCI to justify its planning.

🧮 BCCI’s Response: ‘It’s Not That Simple’

Responding to the criticism, BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia explained that international scheduling is driven by logistics, broadcasting commitments, security clearances, and long-term planning, not just weather or AQI at the last moment.

Key points from the BCCI’s reasoning:

  • 📅 International schedules are locked months—sometimes years—in advance

  • 📡 Broadcast windows and prime-time slots heavily influence venue allocation

  • 🚨 Security, travel distance, and player workload management are crucial

  • 🔁 Changing venues at short notice is not operationally feasible

Saikia emphasized that while environmental concerns are important, no governing body can accurately predict fog intensity or AQI levels months in advance.

🏟️ Player Safety Still a Priority

The BCCI maintained that player safety remains paramount and that:

  • Match officials followed all protocols

  • The decision to abandon was taken only after repeated inspections

  • No player was forced to compete under unsafe conditions

The board acknowledged concerns but reiterated that abandonment decisions lie with match officials, not administrators.

🔜 What’s Next in the Series?

  • The series now moves to Ahmedabad

  • The fifth and final T20I will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on December 19

  • Attention also remains on Shubman Gill’s fitness, after he missed the Lucknow game due to a toe injury sustained in the nets

⚖️ The Bigger Picture

The Lucknow episode has reignited debate around:

  • Winter scheduling in North India

  • Pollution and fog risks

  • Whether environmental data should play a larger role in future venue planning

For now, the BCCI stands by its process, while critics argue that changing climate realities demand evolving solutions.
