The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, but one decision immediately caught attention — no standby or reserve players were named.
With the mega tournament just weeks away, fans and experts questioned the unusual move. Now, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has explained the reasoning behind it.
📌 BCCI’s Reason Behind No Reserve Players
Speaking after the squad announcement, Devajit Saikia clarified that the decision was taken purely due to logistical convenience.
“The T20 World Cup is being held in India. Any replacement player can be called in immediately if required. That is why we have not named reserve players,” Saikia said.
India, along with Sri Lanka, is hosting the tournament — eliminating concerns related to travel delays, visas, or quarantine, which usually make reserve players necessary in overseas events.
🔁 What Happens If a Player Gets Injured?
Traditionally, BCCI names standby players for ICC tournaments so replacements can be flown in quickly if injuries occur. However, since matches are being played on home soil:
Players are readily available
Travel time is not an issue
Squad changes can be made swiftly with ICC approval
Had the World Cup been held outside the subcontinent, reserve players would have been announced, the secretary confirmed.
