Luka Modric played superbly, and Vinicius Junior rounded off a comeback as Real Madrid won 2–0 at Girona on Sunday. Los Banos had a plenitude of chances but were largely extravagant in front of things, especially after Kylian Mbappe lost his firing thrills after a superb penalty-trick against Manchester City in midweek.
Madrid started off on a high note as Mbappé and Vinicius scored successive points on the Girona thing. Still, Paulo Gazzaniga played brilliantly to keep Carlo Ancelotti’s side at bay. Thibaut Cotonis also made some pivotal stops at the other end to keep the score position.
Modric’s moment of magic five twinkles before the break blew the game open. The Croatian controlled a looping concurrence on the edge of the Girona box, and also smashed the ball into the far corner.
Vinicius nearly made it 2-0 but his coiled trouble rattled the bar, while Mbappé should have put the game to bed after 80 twinkles as he ran towards something but his shot was saved. Still, Vinicius soon put the match to rest as he headed to Tanzania after a one-two with Mbappé.
It was a slightly poor performance from Madrid. They missed Jude Bellingham’s drive on the day, and they could have done better finishing. Still, in such a tight title race, Ancelotti can have many complaints.
