Simon Taufel

Former elite cricket umpire Simon Taufel has called for a major rule change in T20 International cricket, insisting that bowlers need more freedom to restore balance between bat and ball.

🏏 “Let a Bowler Bowl the Fifth Over”

Speaking about the evolution of T20 cricket, Taufel openly advocated allowing bowlers to bowl five overs instead of the current four.

“I want a bowler to bowl a fifth over in T20 cricket,” Taufel said.

According to him, the format has increasingly become batting-dominated, with flat pitches, short boundaries, and impact-player-style tactics reducing bowlers’ influence on the game.

⚖️ Restoring Balance in T20 Cricket

Taufel believes giving one extra over to bowlers—especially strike bowlers—would:

  • Bring tactical depth back into the game

  • Reduce one-sided, high-scoring contests

  • Reward skillful bowling under pressure

With teams frequently scoring 200+ totals, the former umpire feels the game risks losing its competitive edge if bowlers aren’t given better tools to fight back.

🌟 A Voice That Carries Weight

Simon Taufel’s opinion holds significant credibility. The 54-year-old Australian is widely regarded as one of the greatest umpires in cricket history, having won the ICC Umpire of the Year award five consecutive times from 2004 to 2008—a record that still stands.

🔮 Will ICC Consider the Proposal?

While the ICC has not commented on the suggestion yet, debates around rule changes in T20 cricket continue to grow as the format evolves rapidly. Whether Taufel’s idea gains traction remains to be seen, but it has certainly reignited discussion around the bat vs ball imbalance.
