Jasprit Bumrah

While speculation around his availability has intensified, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate offered clarity at Monday’s press conference, confirming that Bumrah is indeed available for selection for the Edgbaston Test starting July 2.

“Bumrah is available for the game. We knew from the start he would play only 3 out of the 5 Tests.

He’s had 8 days to recover from the last match, but considering the conditions and his workload, we haven’t made a final decision yet. We also need to assess the other players’ workloads. So technically, yes, he is available, but we haven’t decided if he will play,” ten Doeschate said.

India’s pace spearhead was the standout performer during the opening Test in Leeds, particularly in the first innings where he picked up a five-wicket haul, helping India seize a slender six-run lead. However, he remained wicketless in the second innings, as England mounted a successful chase of 371 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Ten Doeschate elaborated on the team’s cautious approach, emphasizing that Bumrah’s availability does not guarantee his immediate return to the ΧΙ.

“Yeah, so with Bumrah he is ready to play, uh, so like I said in the first, very first question, it’s how we manage these 4 tests. So if we feel like there’swe manage these 4 tests. So if we feel like there’s value in playing him in this test, we’ll make that call at the very last minute, but you know I’m talking about whether, uh, how the pitcher’s gonna play, are we better off holding him back for Lords and and maybe Manchester or or or the Oval, so it’s all those factors, but you know you’ve seen him train yesterday, he trained a little bit today, it’s not like he’s not fit to play. It’s just trying to, you know, fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of him out of the out of what we know we do have from him,” he added.

It is now known to everyone that Bumrah would not feature in all five Tests in order to manage his physical load, particularly given his importance to India’s bowling plans across formats. Skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir had both earlier acknowledged that they would decide on Bumrah’s participation on a match-by-match basis, depending on conditions and fitness levels.

Reports last week indicated that the team management might consider resting Bumrah for the second Test to keep him fresh for the back-end of the series. Should that happen, India would face a significant challenge in the pace department. Without Bumrah, the trio of Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Shardul Thakur looked underwhelming in Leeds, failing to sustain pressure on the English batters, whocapitalized on the inconsistency and chased down a steep target with relative ease.

Bumrah, currently ranked No.1 on the ICC Test Bowlers’ list, remains the most dependable weapon in India’s pace arsenal. His presence or absence in the second Test could well influence the balance of the series. While the final decision is likely to be taken after assessing pitch conditions and team combinations, all eyes will be on the toss at Edgbaston to see if India unleash their ace once again.
