George Linde

Harare [Zimbabwe], July 14: A remarkable three-wicket performance by all-rounder George Linde and a blazing innings from Dewald Brevis enabled South Africa to topple Zimbabwe in the opening match of the tri-nation series that includes New Zealand on Monday.

In pursuit of 142 runs, South Africa faced early difficulties, but pivotal contributions from debutant Rubin Hermann, Brevis, and all-rounder Corbin Bosch rescued them from danger, clinching victory with 25 balls to spare.

Under the captaincy of Rassie Van Der Dussen, South Africa won the toss and opted to field first.

However, skipper Sikandar Raza assumed responsibility, partnering with all-rounder Ryan Burl, to guide the hosts past the 100-run landmark in 15.4 overs.

Pacer Nandre Burger halted the 66-run partnership for the fourth wicket, sending Burl packing for a quick 29 off 20 balls, including three fours and a six. Zimbabwe stood at 121/4 in 17.1 overs.

Raza concluded with an unbeaten 54* off 38 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes, as Zimbabwe set a target of 141/6 in their 20 overs.

Zimbabwe placed South Africa in a precarious position at 38/3 in 5.4 overs, with Reeza Hendricks (11) and skipper Dussen (16) also dismissed.

Hermann, also making his debut, partnered with Brevis to add 72 runs for the fourth wicket, propelling South Africa past the 100-run mark in just 11 overs.

Trevor Gwandu (2/15) claimed Brevis for a brisk 41 off 17 balls, including one four and five sixes.
