Shakib, who many regard as one of the finest players on the Bangladesh cricket team, has been going through a rough patch lately. His situation has only gotten more complicated with the recent political turmoil in the country.
The court’s decision means he’s stuck in Bangladesh, and it all ties back to the corruption allegations swirling around him.
It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t just a cricket issue; there’s a political angle here too. Shakib is a member of parliament for the Awami League, and the court’s ruling is connected to corruption claims involving 15 members of this political party. Special Judge Mohammad Zakir Hussain made this call after looking over two petitions from the Anti-Corruption Commission.
So, what exactly are the allegations?
According to the petition, Shakib and others are accused of making risky stock market investments that go against Bangladesh’s stock market regulations. The commission alleges that Shakib and his associates were involved in transactions totaling 8.97 crore taka, with 4.48 crore being funneled into fraudulent activities. Consequently, they’re facing charges for violating rules 19 (1) and 24 (3).
The cricket world is in a bit of a bind.
It’s still uncertain how this ruling will impact Shakib’s cricket career. Since the Pakistan Super League, this celebrated all-rounder hasn’t stepped onto the field. His last appearance for Bangladesh was in October 2024, after serving a six-month ban from the England and Wales Cricket Board. He made his return to the PSL once that ban was lifted.
Shakib had hoped to retire after the home Test series against South Africa, but the political climate in Bangladesh has thrown a wrench in those plans. At one point, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was at the helm of the Awami League government, and since Shakib is an MP for this party, the nationwide protests against the government have directly affected him.
