India’s star cricketer Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title last year and then led Punjab Kings to the final this year, said he loves captaincy as it brings out the best in him.
Iyer scored 604 runs, playing a key role in Punjab Kings reaching the IPL 2025 final but could not make it to the Indian squad for the five-Test series in England.
“Captaincy brings a lot of maturity and responsibility. You are always expected to perform well and you want to give your best for the team. In any kind of difficult situation or adversity, the team comes to the captain,” Iyer said after leading the SoBo Mumbai Falcons to the T20 Mumbai League semi-finals. He said, “I have been captaining since the age of 22. I enjoy it.”

I try to stay fully focused, stay in the present and perform according to the situation. I keep telling myself that I want my name to be on the lips of the audience and this inspires me.”
Iyer said that it feels good to play with familiar faces in this tournament who were with him in his childhood cricket journey. He said, “There are many familiar faces in the dressing room. I have played with them in club cricket, school and college. Then it feels good to play with them here.”
