The cancellation of the fourth T20I between India and South Africa in Lucknow due to dense fog and hazardous air quality sparked a wider debate on venue selection, drawing a sharp reaction from senior Congress leader and noted cricket enthusiast Shashi Tharoor. The BCCI, through its Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia, has now responded, outlining the logistical and scheduling realities behind the decision.

🌫️ What Happened in Lucknow?

The match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium never got underway as persistent fog severely reduced visibility.

  • 🕡 Toss scheduled: 6:30 pm IST

  • ⏱️ Delayed to: 6:50 pm IST

  • 🔍 Multiple inspections conducted

  • ⛔ Match abandoned around 9:30 pm

Air quality readings in the city remained in the hazardous zone, with the AQI crossing 400, raising serious concerns over player safety. India all-rounder Hardik Pandya was even spotted wearing a surgical mask during warm-ups.

🗣️ Shashi Tharoor’s Criticism

Reacting to the prolonged delay and eventual abandonment, Tharoor took to social media to question the BCCI’s venue choice, contrasting Lucknow’s conditions with those in Kerala.

“Thanks to dense smog, pervasive in most north Indian cities, and an AQI of 411, visibility is too poor to permit a game of cricket. They should’ve scheduled the game in Thiruvananthapuram, where AQI is about 68 right now!”

His comments amplified public frustration, especially among fans who had waited hours in the stadium.

🧮 BCCI’s Response: ‘Scheduling Isn’t That Simple’

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia explained that international scheduling involves far more than just weather forecasts or air quality indices.

According to Saikia, venue allocation is based on:

  • 📆 Long-term international calendars

  • ✈️ Team travel logistics

  • 🏟️ Venue rotation policies

  • 📺 Broadcast and commercial commitments

  • 🛡️ Security and operational readiness

He emphasized that fixtures are locked months, sometimes years, in advance, and last-minute changes are often logistically impossible without disrupting the entire tour schedule.

⚠️ Player Safety Remains Central

While defending the scheduling process, BCCI officials maintained that player safety is non-negotiable, which is why the match was abandoned once it became clear that conditions would not improve.

The board acknowledged growing concerns over winter pollution in north India, but stressed that real-time decisions are taken strictly based on match-day assessments by umpires and officials.

🔄 What’s Next in the Series

The series now moves to Ahmedabad, where the fifth and final T20I will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium on December 19.

Meanwhile, attention is also on Shubman Gill’s fitness, after he was ruled out of the Lucknow game due to a toe injury sustained during a net session.

🧠 Bigger Picture

The Lucknow washout has reignited a long-standing debate on:

  • Winter fixtures in north India

  • Air quality and athlete health

  • Whether venue allocation should adapt more dynamically to environmental trends

While Tharoor’s comments reflected public sentiment, the BCCI’s response highlighted the complex arithmetic behind international cricket scheduling — where ideal conditions, logistics and global commitments must all align.
