The exclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026 has triggered fresh debate, with former India opener Aakash Chopra openly expressing disappointment over the decision.
Jaiswal, who has already established himself as a key batter in Test cricket, was considered a strong contender for the marquee tournament. He had served as a backup opener during the previous T20 World Cup and was once again in the reckoning. However, the selectors opted for Ishan Kishan as the reserve opener and wicketkeeper, leaving both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill out of the 15-member squad.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said:
“The way Yashasvi Jaiswal is playing, logically he should have been in the team. He has proved himself whenever he got opportunities.”
Chopra highlighted that Jaiswal is among a rare group of six Indian players who have scored centuries in all three formats, underlining his adaptability and class across conditions.

Chopra explained that the situation changed rapidly when the team management chose to prioritise Test cricket, resting Jaiswal from T20Is. During this phase, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson were given opportunities — and both delivered impactful performances.
“Sanju Samson played so well that he cemented his place. Suddenly, there was no space left,” Chopra added.
With Samson locking down his spot and Kishan being preferred as the backup opener-keeper, Jaiswal slipped out of contention despite his form.
