Man City 0-1 Brighton: Ayari Stuns Etihad as City Suffer Second Straight League Defeat
Manchester City lost 1-0 to Brighton at the Etihad on Saturday, with Yasin Ayari scoring the only goal in the 11th minute. It was City’s second consecutive Premier League defeat, and it leaves Enzo Maresca‘s side with serious questions to answer.
Manchester City’s season is unravelling. Slowly, but unmistakably.
Three days after needing penalties to beat Brighton in the Carabao Cup, City faced the same opponent in the league. Maresca made ten changes, restoring Haaland, Donnarumma, Dias, and Gvardiol to the starting lineup. It was supposed to be a statement. It was supposed to be a response to the Aston Villa defeat.
Instead, it was another defeat.
The Goal That Decided It
The match was decided in the 11th minute. Brighton worked the ball into the box, and Maxim De Cuyper found Ayari with a pass that split City’s defence. Ayari finished past Donnarumma with ease.
City dominated possession after that. They created chances. Haaland had efforts. Doku caused problems. But they could not find the equaliser. Brighton defended deep, absorbed pressure, and held on.
It was a familiar story. City had the ball, but not the breakthrough.
My Take: This Is Not a Blip. It Is a Pattern.
Everyone will point to the fixture congestion. They will point to the Carabao Cup match going to penalties. They will point to Brighton’s quality.
All of that is true. But it does not explain the pattern.
City have now lost two consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since August 2025. The second of those defeats was also against Brighton. That is not a coincidence. That is a problem.
Maresca’s rotation against Brighton in the cup was sensible. But the league is the priority, and City lost the league match. The ten changes he made for this game were supposed to fix that. They did not.
The midfield is not controlling games. The defence is not keeping clean sheets. And the attack, for all its possession, is not converting chances.
City are third. They are two points behind Arsenal. But the gap feels larger than that. Because the performances are not improving. They are getting worse.
There is also the psychological factor. City have won four Premier League titles in a row. They have been the standard-bearers for a decade. But this season, they look like a team that has lost its edge. The pressing is not as intense. The passing is not as crisp. The movement is not as fluid. And the results are reflecting that.
Maresca has inherited a squad that knows how to win. But knowing how to win and actually winning are two different things. Right now, City are doing the first and not the second.
The Haaland Problem
Erling Haaland is still scoring goals. He has 13 in all competitions this season. But he is not scoring them in the big moments. Against Brighton, he had chances. He did not take them.
That is not a criticism of Haaland. He is one of the best strikers in the world. But City’s reliance on him is becoming a problem. When he does not score, nobody else does. The midfield is not contributing enough goals. The wingers are not contributing enough goals. And the defence is not contributing any goals at all.
Against Brighton, City had 18 shots. Only four were on target. That is not good enough. That is not a team that is going to win titles.
What Happens Next
City travel to Nottingham Forest next weekend, then face the Champions League, then Arsenal. If they play like this, they will lose all three.
Maresca has to find answers. The squad is fit. The players are available. But the system is not working. And the pressure is building.
Brighton, meanwhile, climb to third with the win. They are two points behind City. And they have now beaten City in the league for the first time in their history.
That is a statement. And it is a warning.
