Messi vs Mbappe: The World Cup Goal Record That Could Fall in 2026
Lionel Messi has 19 World Cup goals. Kylian Mbappe has 18. And the 2026 World Cup is not over yet. This is the record that Google searches spike for every time either of them scores .
Messi and Mbappe are the two most searched footballers on the planet right now. Google Trends data shows Messi is the most searched player globally, with Ronaldo second and Mbappe fifth . But when it comes to World Cup goals, the gap between them is just one.
The Record That Defines World Cup Greatness
| Rank | Player | World Cup Goals | Tournaments |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lionel Messi | 19 | 2006-2026 |
| 2 | Kylian Mbappe | 18 | 2018-2026 |
| 3 | Miroslav Klose | 16 | 2002-2014 |
Messi broke Klose’s record of 16 goals during the 2026 tournament. Mbappe then overtook Klose as well, moving into second place with 18 . Every time either of them scores, Google searches for “Messi World Cup goals” and “Mbappe World Cup goals” spike globally .
My Take: This Is the Record People Actually Search For
Everyone talks about Messi’s 8 Ballon d’Ors. Everyone talks about Ronaldo’s 140 Champions League goals. But the record that generates the most search traffic is the World Cup goal record.
Why? Because the World Cup is the only truly global football event. It happens every four years. It captures the attention of people who do not watch club football. And Messi vs Mbappe is the rivalry that defines this era.
Messi is 39. This is likely his last World Cup. Mbappe is 27. This is likely his peak. The record will probably belong to Mbappe eventually. But for now, Messi holds it. And every match either of them plays generates millions of searches.
What Happens Next
The 2026 World Cup is over. Spain won it. But the Messi vs Mbappe record chase is not over. Mbappe is one goal behind. He will have at least one more World Cup in him. Messi may not.
If Mbappe breaks the record in 2030, the search spike will be enormous. If Messi holds it forever, the debate will never end.
Either way, this is the record people search for. Not the Ballon d’Ors. Not the Champions League goals. The World Cup goals.
