Michael Olise Biography: The Quiet Genius Who Let His Football Do the Talking
Michael Olise biography is a story about a boy who barely celebrated his goals. He would score, turn around, and walk back to the halfway line. No fist pumps. No knee slides. No shouting. Just football. And that is exactly how he still plays today.
Olise was born in Hammersmith, London, on December 12, 2001. His father, Vincent, is Nigerian. His mother, Mina, is French-Algerian. He comes from four countries, and he has said he feels a connection to all of them . He chose France for his international career.
He grew up in Hayes, west London. And from the very beginning, he was different.
The Boy Who Was Too Quiet
Daniel Coker was Olise’s sports teacher at Dr Triplett’s CE Primary School in Hayes. He remembered the first time he saw him play.
“The sports coaches came to me one day and said have you seen this boy… in year two? When I saw him play… I knew that he was going to be something special” .
Olise was not just good at football. He was good at everything. He was a cross-country running champion for the London borough of Hillingdon. He won a district sports gold medal in the 400m. He was a talented cricketer. He played chess .
But football was different. At Hayes & Yeading, he lined up against a young Bukayo Saka, who played for Greenford Celtic in the same league. “Both teams had some very good players, but those two were a cut above,” said Richards, who coached Olise at the time. “So it was pretty much them grabbing the games by the scruff of the neck” .
Richards also remembered a volley from the halfway line at a summer tournament. “It was one of those where you think, ‘Oh my god. I’m in my twenties and I can’t do that!'” .
But what stood out most was his reaction to scoring. Coker explained: “Michael was a quiet and shy boy. He gave so many assists to our team, he’d score loads of goals, but he didn’t used to celebrate, he just used to get back straight in and want to go again. He didn’t like the limelight” .
That has not changed.
The Rejections That Made Him
Olise’s path was not straightforward. He spent seven years in Chelsea‘s academy before being released at 14. He had a short spell at Manchester City, and they let him go too .
Brendan Flanagan, Reading’s head of recruitment, had to persuade his bosses to sign the 16-year-old in 2018. “Because of the biases that go on in football, it took me a little bit longer to convince people in the building to bring him in because [he was] released from Chelsea, released from Man City – some people would see that as this is going to be a big problem,” he said .
Flanagan saw something different. “What might have been deemed as Michael being problematic at other clubs, because he’s quiet, he’s shy, he’s reserved, but we can work with those kids because that doesn’t make them a bad kid, it just makes them a little bit different” .
At Chelsea, some coaches found him difficult. There were days when he would turn up for training and not want to take part. He was obsessed with wearing the No 10 shirt and would put it on before the line-up had even been named. Chelsea had conversations with people inside and outside the club to understand him better. It wasn’t that he was nasty or rude. He just did not conform .
Reading gave him a chance. And he took it.
The Reading Years
Olise made his Reading debut on March 18, 2019, as a substitute in a 3-0 home defeat by Leeds United. He was 17 years and three months old .
His breakthrough came in the 2020/21 season. He started 37 league matches, scored seven goals, and provided 12 assists. One of those goals was an 89th-minute winner at Queens Park Rangers on his 19th birthday .
Tom Cooper, Reading’s academy performance analyst, said his stats placed him among the best creative players in the top two divisions of England, along with the top tiers of Spain, Germany, France, and Italy. “It shows he was among the best-performing creative players in Europe even when playing for Reading in the Championship,” Cooper said .
He was named the EFL’s Young Player of the Year and voted into the Championship Team of the Season. Crystal Palace came calling. The fee was £8 million .
Crystal Palace and the Move to Bayern
Olise spent three seasons at Crystal Palace. He impressed in the Premier League, but his time there was interrupted by injuries. He showed enough to attract Bayern Munich, who signed him in the summer of 2024 for a reported €60 million .
At Bayern, everything changed.
His first season was remarkable. He scored 15 goals and provided 19 assists in 32 Bundesliga appearances. Only Harry Kane matched his output in the Bayern squad. He finished ninth in the Ballon d’Or voting .
The 2025/26 season was even better. He scored 15 goals and provided 19 assists in 32 matches across all competitions, with a goal involvement rate of 1.32 per 90 minutes . He was one of the best players in Europe, and everyone knew it.
But he still barely celebrated.
The World Cup Breakthrough
Olise went to the 2026 World Cup with France. And he became the first player to assist five goals at a single World Cup since Thomas Hassler in 1994 .
He was the creative hub of a France team that reached the final. He did not score much himself, but he did not need to. His job was to create, and he did it better than anyone.
The world noticed. Liverpool noticed. Arsenal noticed. Real Madrid noticed .
The Transfer Battle
As of November 2026, Olise’s future is the subject of a quiet war.
Bayern Munich want to extend his contract. His current deal runs until 2029, but the club is determined to tie him down to a new one. Fabrizio Romano reported that persuading Olise to sign a new deal is Bayern’s “next mission” after extending Harry Kane’s contract .
Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed the plan: “We have always said that we don’t just have Harry as a fantastic player in our ranks, but also players like Michael Olise, among others. His contract runs until 2029, and we will discuss that in due course” .
But Real Madrid are interested. Florentino Perez is a known admirer. Bayern are aware of the appreciation and want to stop future attempts by agreeing to a new contract .
Liverpool are also long-term admirers. Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown said: “If Liverpool are given any indication that Olise could be available, I expect they will be all over it, because he’s somebody they’ve wanted for a long time” .
There is also the injury concern. Olise limped off in the closing stages of the Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund on October 31, 2026. He had pain in his knee. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said: “With Olise, we think it’s not so bad. But it’s relatively difficult to say right after games like that with the adrenaline. But let’s assume it’s not so bad” .
He was a doubt for the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid and the November international break with France .
My Take: The Quiet Ones Always Work Hardest
Everyone will talk about the numbers. 15 goals. 19 assists. Five assists at a World Cup. The transfer battle. The contract talks.
But the real story of this Michael Olise biography is the silence.
He does not celebrate. He does not do interviews. He does not have a boot deal. He does not seek the spotlight. He just plays.
His teachers saw it. His coaches saw it. His teammates see it. And now the world sees it.
There is a quote from Sean Conlon, a coach who worked with him as a child, that captures it perfectly: “He glided across the pitch. There was ease about the way he did things” .
That is still true. Olise glides. He creates. He scores. And then he walks back to the halfway line, ready to do it again.
The quiet ones always work hardest. And Michael Olise is proof.
